In 1976, Ulrich Köbl, 3rd/sub-principal horn with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra at the time, set up his business Musikalienversand Ulrich Köbl in Aubing on the edge of Munich. It initially sold brass music by German publishing companies. Contact was soon established with the music publisher IMC in the United States, and orchestral studies for horn were ordered and delivered for the first time. Köbl’s orchestra colleagues were delighted, and soon the other brass musicians began asking him for sheet music from the United States too. Ulrich Köbl ran the music mail order business for five years as a sideline while playing in the orchestra: in the mornings before the orchestra rehearsals, for a few hours in the afternoon and often at night too after concerts. By this time, the music mail order business and shop had become well known throughout Germany, and Köbl was no longer able to cope with all the orders alongside his musical career. In 1981, a music dealer was hired on a full-term basis and the name of the business was changed to Blechbläsersortiment Ulrich Köbl. The number of customers steadily grew, and sheet music was delivered throughout Europe and even to Japan. On 1 January 2007, after 30 successful years, the business was taken over by Dieter Walter, who continues to run the shop and the mail order business as Blechbläsersortiment Köbl, bringing with him own music publishing company, Edition Diewa, which focuses on sheet music for wood and brass. The shop has subsequently moved to Sommerstrasse 9 right in the heart of Munich.
